Cancer-Related Fatigue

Battling cancer is one of the most significant challenges one can encounter in life – but often, the smaller, less obvious problems can be the most difficult to deal with. While it’s not often touted as a major cancer symptom, cancer-related fatigue is an incredibly common problem that can have a serious impact on quality of life before, during, and after treatment. At Phoenix CyberKnife, we want to make every part of the cancer treatment process as easy and effective as possible. Here are our tips for managing cancer-related fatigue.

Talk to Your Doctor

The first step when dealing with fatigue is to speak with your cancer care team. Often, the fatigue is coming from another, underlying problem: you may be anemic, you may not be eating enough, or you may even just be having trouble getting to sleep. Understanding the causes of your fatigue can help you manage it.

Light Exercise

While it may seem counterintuitive, sometimes a gentle exercise regimen is the best way to manage cancer-related fatigue. It’s easy to stay sedentary during cancer treatment, but this often saps your energy and exacerbates the problem of fatigue. Gentle exercises and activities like walking can help you stay in shape and manage fatigue.

Accept It

Sometimes, though, there is no cause and there’s nothing you can do – and if that’s the case, it’s important to accept the fatigue and give your body the rest it needs. Don’t be afraid to take some time off to relax and recharge. Cancer is a difficult battle, and being kind to yourself is important for successful treatment.
