Renal Cell Carcinoma: Metastasized to tumors in the Chest against the Heart
Treated with Cyberknife VSI : one treatment per day for 5 days

-I was referred to a Hematology Oncologist, that told me the tumors were inoperable and that Radiation would not work-

-Dr. John Kresl, Radiation Oncologist at Phoenix Cyberknife, explained everything to our satisfaction and made us feel hopeful to the success of this treatment. He alleviated most of the anxiety we had been feeling-

-The reasons we chose Phoenix Cyberknife and Radiation Oncology Center was due to the reputation and experience of Dr. Kresl and the professional compassionate manner of Amanda Thomas. Phoenix Cyberknife was the most helpful of any treatment center we spoke to-

-Standard Radiation Therapy (IMRT/IGRT) is not strong enough for Renal Cell Carcinoma. The location of my tumor, between the lungs and beside the heart makes broad beam radiation not possible-

My wife and I live in Vancouver, Canada where there is no Cyberknife VSI.

I am a retired computer technician. I have a very active lifestyle, of fishing – rivers, lakes and oceans as well as hunting and woodworking.  We spend a lot of time traveling, at our cabin in the wilderness or in our RV

6-years ago I thought I had kidney stones; the CT scan showed Renal Cell Carcinoma, and I my left kidney removed.  The cancer came back; tumors had metastasized to my chest, located against my heart.  I was referred to a hematology oncologist that told me the tumors were inoperable and that Radiation would not work. I was put on an oral chemo drug for 23 months. When the tumor started to increase I was put on Afinitor, another chemo drug for 3 months; but the side effects were too much.

My wife heard about Cyberknife VSI on a Cancer Compass discussion group. We understood this was not surgery but rather; intensely accurate radiation, motion sensitive and strong doses. Standard Radiation Therapy (IMRT/IGRT) is not strong enough for Renal Cell Carcinoma. The location of my tumor, between the lungs and beside the heart makes broad beam radiation not possible.

We contacted Accuray that suggested we call Dr John Kresl at Phoenix Cyberknife and Radiation Oncology Center due to his experience with my conditions.

At the center we were always treated professionally. The staff was so friendly and compassionate. We were especially grateful to Amanda Thomas who was outstanding from the first contact with the center with her prompt and efficient assistance. She made the entire experience awesome.

I had one treatment per day for 5 days. It was relaxing, there was no pain and no discomfort.

I feel better 3 weeks after treatment, and yes I would recommend Phoenix Cyberknife and Radiation Oncology Center to anyone with my type of cancer. We have already been telling others of our positive experience including our doctors here who have been interested in the treatment.

Richard “Dick” Lane
Prostate Cancer
Treatment: Cyberknife VSI

I chose Phoenix Cyberknife because of the entire process and most importantly the lack of after effects.
Everyone at Phoenix Cyberknife was professional, courteous and FANTASTIC!!

I went through an extremely extensive research process to determine all the facts regarding the side effects of the various treatments, and most importantly, the after affects. I talked to over ten, friends, neighbors and acquaintances who have had prostate cancer and have gone through various treatments. I was not satisfied with any of their results. A friend of mine, a New York Heart Surgeon suggested I look into the Cyberknife treatment.
I was an R.V. Dealer in the Chicago area and retired in 1992. I now live in a beautiful retirement community, Sun City Grand in Surprise Arizona. I own a Border Collie and spend about two hours every evening at our dog park with him, watching him run and play with his friends. I still enjoy playing golf as much as possible.

I found out about my Prostate Cancer from a routine physical. My PSA had gone from 4 to 6. I consulted a Urologist and he advised me that I could either do nothing, or I could have a biopsy. I chose the biopsy, which showed cancer in two of the twelve strips. I was then more informed that I could again, do nothing, have radiation seeds implanted, have cryo (freezing), have radiation treatment or have my prostate completely removed.
I contacted Phoenix Cyberknife and was referred to Dr Daniels. He explained to me everything that I was looking for. Dr Daniels gave me peace of mind at a very troubling time. I had another PSA test and my results had gone to 10.1. It was time to get this done.
Dr Daniels explained that gold marker would be placed where the cancer was located and that the Cyberknife would zero in on the spots only, and not in general locations like other treatment options. Cyberknife causes the very least amount of radiation to surrounding areas. I had 5 treatments, with set up, each lasted an hour, for which I slept through. I had NO pain.

After treatment I have felt great! M PSA is down to 1.0. I have had NO side effects, and life is good! I have recommended Phoenix Cyberknife and Radiation Oncology Center to several people already!

Thank you Dr Daniels and the entire staff at PCROC!

Ocular Melanoma metastasized to Liver Tumor
Treatment: Cyberknife and Novalis Truebeam STx with ExacTrac

Dr Kresl saved my life…..

While the Phoenix Cyberknife “machinery” and treatment is amazing …unbelievable even…Dr Kresl is terrific! While the machines have killed my cancer so far…Dr Kresl saved my life….and for that my wife and I will be eternally grateful!

I am 64 years old, been retired for the past 8 years, and was a CEO of a NYSE Company.

It has been a three year saga.  About this time three years ago, I was diagnosed with a non-malignant growth behind my left eye that was wrapped around muscle and the optic nerve.  While diagnosed as non-malignant, I was told that there was the possibility that it would become a Melanoma.  I was not convinced to have the eye removed at that point.  My wife and I visited Dr. Kresl some months later on the advice of my Eye Surgeon, to determine if there was a treatment to deal with the growth short of eye removal.  Dr Kresl said there was nothing he could do without destroying the eye, BUT more importantly, he convinced us that there was an extreme probability that the growth would become a Melanoma, not just a possibility.  He recommended that we remove the eye.  That turned out to be a lifesaving recommendation.  I had the eye removed two months later, and the thought to be non-malignant growth had already become a Melanoma. Dr Kresl saved my life…..

Subsequent to the surgery, we went back to Dr Kresl for Radiosurgery with Novalis Truebeam STx on the eye cavity to clear any remaining cancer that remained.  It consisted of 5 treatments in 5 days …each approximately an hour in length.  So far my “head” has remained clear of any further Melanoma.  I get MRI’s every 6 months.

One of the attributes of Ocular Melanomas is they “travel”.  Immediately subsequent to the surgery, my doctors began monitoring my liver for a Melanoma to show up.  Pet Scans every 3 months.  Last summer a Melanoma was diagnosed in my Liver and it was in a precarious location.  Dr Kresl again treated me, this time with Cyberknife VSI Radiosurgery;  3 Treatments in 3 days, about an hour each.

While I’m still on the MRI/Pet Scan “frequent flier” program, except for the loss of an eye, which isn’t bad compared to the loss of your life…everything is normal.

“There are two elements in my mind that defines the right choice.

    • Get the best doctor you can.
    • The best technology you can.

PCROC has both!  Having only one of those is not the best you can do.”

“Best treatment ever.  I have had full brain radiation (like 25 days straight) and Gamma Knife (where an attachment is screwed into your head).  The CyberKnife by far was much easier to go through, one short treatment, nothing screwed into my head, and soothing music with nice scenery looking up. As it was happening I said to myself…

Wow! This is the best treatment I ever had.”

“The treatment was shorter than any other scan or test procedure I have had, 15-20 minutes.”

I feel I am getting the best care (doctor/technology) that I can get here in Phoenix.  Since my case is so difficult, I do have a team of doctors taking care of me both at Memorial Sloan Kettering and Phoenix Cyberknife and Radiation Oncology Center, (PCROC).  In May of 2005 I went from a diagnosis of having 3-4 months to live,  to having the best years of my life for the past 7 years.   I speak to a lot of cancer patients and express how important it is to take control of your health situation.  Everyone is different, but get the best care you can for yourself and select the right doctors/facilities that will do the best for you.  Do not settle for what is convenient for you.  As in my case, it can be a life or death situation.  You owe it to yourself and your family to search for the best care.  That’s the best you can do.  Bottom line….I would, without a doubt  recommend Dr. Kresl and PCROC assuming your specific case needed that type of care.

Prior to my illness, I was very active with my family, career, and health activities. On the career aspect, I was a Global Engineering IT Manager.  I worked for GM/ Delphi for 29 years.  It was a fantastic job which I truly appreciated.  I have been to many countries around the world and experienced different cultures/people, great experience.   I also had the opportunity to take my family on an international assignment for 3 years.  Best thing we ever did as a family.   On the health activities, I played a variety of sports (up to the time of my illness); basketball, baseball, biking, as well as regular workouts and the gym, spinning, weight lifting, etc.  In fact 2 weeks before my diagnoses I did a 4 hour straight spinning class to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Cancer Foundation…before I knew I was sick.  Funny thing, most all the guys (including me) shaved their heads in support of cancer patients.  Little did I know a few weeks later it would have happened anyway

While playing basketball, a good friend of mine (who was a doctor) noticed I was coughing quite a bit over the last couple weeks.  He asked me to come to the hospital for a chest x-ray along with a checkup.  Nothing showed up.    So a couple weeks later he asked me to get a CT scan.  That’s when we found the lung tumor.  Having lung cancer was very strange since I never smoked a cigarette in my life.  It was then that I realized you do not have to be a smoker to get lung cancer.

After they saw the lung tumor in the CT, they did more tests.  Bone scan, PET scan, etc..  What they found shocked everyone, including me.

Diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer – adenocarcinoma (non-smoker):

Primary tumor in left lower lung with metastasis/tumors in spine (T3, T5, T8 & T10 & L3 vertebrae) and 2 lesions in left hilum (chest). Over time, I had recurrences in spine and 4 new tumors in brain.  Later, tests found 3 new tumors in the brain. Most recently, a tumor found and treated by PCROC in December of 2011.  Current treatment includes blood work & chemo (4-week intervals) and daily oral medications.

I knew this was extremely bad, Stage IV Lung Cancer.  I knew I had to search for the best care.  So I went from my small local hospital to the Cleveland Clinic since I was living in OH at that time.  They are very well known as one of the best hospitals in the country.  I know now that are rated #1 in the US for heart, not cancer.  After seeing my imaging results, they told me the best thing to do is take a two week vacation with the family and to get my finances in order.  Crushing news.  But I am a competitor, so I could not just give up.  I started researching on my own but this time looking for the best cancer hospitals in the country.  Turns out M.D. Anderson and Memorial  Sloan Kettering (MSK)  are number 1 & 2 consistently in the US.  So I decided to go to MSK in New York City since logistically made more sense.  It was the right choice.

I heard about PCROC from my trusted Dr. Kresl who suggested Cyberknife VSI, the most advanced Cyberknife available on the market and in Arizona. Dr Kresl made me feel great.  I cannot say enough good things about him.

I did the research to understand how the technology works.  Being an engineer myself, I was very impressed with its capabilities

I have had other experiences in OH and in Phoenix.  I would rate PCROC as the best I have had.  Not that the others were that bad, it was just PCROC was the best.

All the staff I have met at PCROC has been both caring and professional, PCROC is EXCELLENT!  Patients going through these very difficult times really do appreciate a caring/friendly atmosphere….but at the same time PCROC also demonstrates professionalism and confidence in what they do.

Follow-up care was excellent. They made sure what the next step was and scheduled what was needed.

Terry and Barbara (wife)
Prostate Cancer
Treatment: Novalis Truebeam STx

I chose Phoenix Cyberknife for two reasons:

  1. My Urologist, Dr. Donald Lamm…he is one of the BEST and his word STANDS TALL.
  2. Meeting Dr. Kresl, who tells you how it is, was the deciding factor.  His doctor/patient relationship is A-1.

The Staff of Phoenix Cyberknife is The BEST of the BEST…you couldn’t find any better, from the greeting of the Receptionist at the front office, the Patient Care Coordinator, Nursing, Radiation therapists, all the way through the staff to the treatment room, you are treated like you’re the only person being cared for…the BEST.

I am extremely active.  I work on a golf course during the summer months where playing golf is required along with my working duties.  During the winter months I fish at least four days a week in the mornings and work in my yard and garden the remaining hours.

I went to my annual check-up and found that I had an elevated PSA. My follow-up biopsy showed I had prostate cancer.

After the biopsy I chose to have Cryo-Surgery (freezing procedure) rather than the full surgery–it worked for a year. Then the PSA showed a steady increase, meaning the Cryo didn’t get all the cancer.  My Urologist recommended the radiation treatment done by the Phoenix Cyberknife and Radiation Oncology Center (PCROC) and referred me to Dr John Kresl.  I didn’t know what to expect until Dr. Kresl thoroughly explained the HOW, WHAT AND WHY after a thorough exam. Dr. Kresl made me feel as comfortable as possible considering the problem and suggested Truebeam STx Radiation Treatment.

The process was a PIECE OF CAKE; you actually wonder if this is for real.  The staff explained everything. I had 37 treatments. Each individual treatment was quick, they took about 10 minutes once they got you set-up.

The follow-up care, one office visit and a couple of phone calls, has been like the rest of PCROC’s operation–PROFESSIONAL.

I feel fine, with my three-month PSA reading being an A+.  I’m looking forward to getting my next test and the reading being the same + .

Telling someone about PCROC would be a no-brainer, especially when you’ve been granted longevity through a simple treatment; “go-for-it.”

I can say this because I have had experiences at other offices that I would rather not comment on.

Terry’s wife Barbara:

“As Terry’s wife, I would like to say how grateful I am to have my husband in the hands of God’s appointed physician.  I have always felt comfortable and at peace with all of you.  Even the other patients in the waiting room have contributed to a sense of well-being.  Thank you, Barbara”

“When a surgeon talks me out of surgery that is saying something!”

“I am doing great and without a doubt will recommend Dr. Stegman and Phoenix Cyberknife and Radiation Oncology Center to any friend’s or colleagues that need Radiation”

I am a 70-year old, semi-retired Diagnostic Radiologist/M.D. I have been a Radiologist for over 40 years.  I am married with 2 adult children and 5 grandkids. I enjoy travel, investing & philately.

I had always had a higher than normal PSA level that suddenly elevated. My family practice doctor referred me to a Urologist, (Larry Bans, MD) who under examination, felt a small nodule. My prostate biopsy came back positive for cancer.

As a physician I had a fair amount of knowledge of the treatment options. I did some additional reading on the subject. Given that I had long standing bladder and voiding problems with self-catheterization Dr Bans, MD recommended external beam radiation therapy (XBRT) as my safest option.

When a surgeon talks me out of surgery that is saying something.

I contacted Lauren Stegman, MD, PhD with Phoenix

Cyberknife and Radiation Oncology Center, strong recommendations from his dad and Dr. Bans, two people that I have much respect for and Dr. Bans said Lauren and his associates were great and did the Truebeam STx, (the most advanced technology in Phoenix for XBRT).

Dr. Stegman carefully explained the equipment and how highly focused the beam was on your modern equipment, resulting in less side effects and long term complications. This in combination with hormone therapy would have a great chance for successful results.

Dr.Stegman is an extremely nice individual that immediately puts one at ease. He was extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of the disease process and treatments and carefully explained all options for Truebeam STx for my somewhat complicated problem

I found Phoenix Cyberknife and Radiation Oncology office and staff to be the most knowledgeable, friendly and efficient, the center is great in all aspects!

My treatment protocol involved 45 treatments, each visit took about 45 total minutes with about 10-15 minutes actually devoted to the Truebeam STx treatment. Once a week I would meet with the physician or PA for an additional 15 minutes to check on how I was doing and to answer my many questions. This plan was great.

Things are going great today.!

“I recommend Phoenix Cyberknife and Radiation Oncology Center (PCROC) to anyone needing Radiation Treatment. I always felt like they cared about me and they were always ready to answer any questions I had”
I was a government employee (State of Arizona) for 25 years. I enjoy travel, and family gatherings. In October 2009 I developed an infection in the right buttocks, during surgery, my surgeon discovered cancer and referred me to John Kresl, MD at Phoenix Cyberknife and Radiation Oncology Center, (PCROC). He was very knowledgeable, encouraging, personable, and comforting. Dr Kresl worked closely with my Surgeon and Medical Oncologist to develop a treatment plan involving Chemo and Radiation Therapy to begin immediately. I felt this treatment plan was specific for me and my cancer.
At PCROC I was treated on the Truebeam STx. Dr Kresl explained to me that through this technology, they could zero in on specific areas to radiate the tumor with minimal damage to the surrounding tissue. I was initially scheduled for 25 radiation treatments, and due to the Chemotherapy side effects, this took 6 weeks.

The entire PCROC staff  were warm, sensitive, and considerate at all times. They made me feel that they were only one phone call away, if needed.
